Recycled polyester. But just how recycled?

Recycled polyester is becoming an increasingly popular material in the fashion industry as a way to reduce waste and ones carbon footprint. However, not all recycled polyester is created equal. Some companies are cutting corners and purchasing virgin plastics that are being recycled directly, rather than post-consumer plastic. This is known as "white washing" and is deceiving customers by using terminology that sounds like something it is not.

The term "recycled polyester" is often used interchangeably to describe polyester made from plastic waste, like water bottles, and polyester made from discarded textiles. Many companies are making commitments to replace all virgin polyester with recycled polyester by a certain date, however, without significant technological improvements, the marketing appeal of these materials will outstrip the environmental benefits.

At My Needs Are Simple, we ensure that we only work with brands that source certified recycled polyester that meets strict industry standards. This ensures that the polyester we use is not only certified recycled but also responsibly sourced. The recycled polyester in our products allows for considerable energy savings in the manufacturing process. It is clear that tackling waste has become one of the major environmental challenges of our time.

Certified by the global recycled standard, the recycled polyester in selected garments is produced from recycled PET bottles, the same plastic bottles used for bottled water which would usually end up in landfill.

The Global Recycled Standard label certifies that the materials used are recycled: in the case of polyester, from plastic bottles, and for cotton, from cutting waste. GRS also guarantees compliance with social and environmental criteria such as treatment of waste water, the absence of certain toxic additives and respect for working conditions in our partner factories.

In conclusion, recycled polyester is a step in the right direction for the fashion industry, but it is important to understand what is certified and what is not. While always be mindful of companies using "white washing" tactics to sell their products. At My Needs Are Simple, we strive to support and work with brands that are truly committed to sustainability and responsible sourcing. As consumers, we can make a difference by choosing to support companies that are transparent about their sourcing and manufacturing processes and are committed to reducing waste and their carbon footprint.
